Woodland and peatland restoration on a private estate

The challenge

We are working with a private Scottish estate located within the Cairngorms National Park to identify, implement, and manage woodland creation and peatland restoration projects across the whole estate. The challenge is to identify and implement suitable planting and restoration sites which align with broader estate priorities.

The solution

Our platform technology enables us to rapidly map the whole estate and pinpoint suitable planting and restoration sites, rated by their potential. This was used as a starting point to co-design woodland creation projects within the estate, which were spatially prioritized to align with other estate activities and objectives.

Our work provides the landholder and estate manager with detailed cost estimates, designs and timelines to establish new woodland and restore peatland, the quantity and expected value of carbon units to be delivered over the project’s lifetime, and co-benefits to local biodiversity and communities.

We are now managing the project development process including ground surveys, project registration, grant applications, and subcontracting of local suppliers and ecology experts from our partner network.

The impact

Our in-depth scoping and project fulfilment capabilities gives the landholder the information and confidence to move from intention to action, while lowering the effort, costs and uncertainties of project development across the value chain.

As these restoration projects progress, they allow biodiverse natural habitats to regenerate while sequestering carbon and improving water regulation.
